BioHOME - A Practical Guide

What does it take to construct a human? How about a home for a human? These are the questions we must ask when composing a closed-system. The pieces of the BioHome work together in symphony to sustain human life.

A "Living" Home

The statistics vary, but BioHome can be tailored to the needs of a specific person or family. One set of human lungs requires a minimum of 250 cu. ft. of plant life or 1 quart of algae to produce enough oxygen to stay alive in closed system. The body requires water on a daily basis, and cannot go without for more than 5 days. A diet of 2000-4000 calories is needed to maintain nutritional balance.

The System will consist of a Green Room, solar distillers, compost area, and methane converters to produce all that anyone would need to stay alive. Once you plant your Green Room with all the necessary vegetables, you don't need to ever go shopping again for produce, and can eliminate the waste and unhealthy aspects of packaged/processed foods. Why go to work to pay for groceries? Let that work you put into a 9 to 5 effort be in your own space. You can have all your favorite fruits and vegetables growing from your own processes. Not only are you recycling byproducts, but your own energies and essences.

Waste Not Want Not

Anywhere on Earth you have sunlight and soil in proper alignment, you have LIFE. BioHome seeks to create and maintain this balance. The BioHome uses the sun to distill water. Later, you may read about the Airwell solar distillation kits, which purify drinking water for people and plants. Apart from distilled drinking and gardening water, human urine also contains all the nitrogen necessary to feed plants. The setup also composts human and plant waste for fertilizer. Plants have been recycling themselves since the dawn of vegetation, so why not let that process work for you?

In addition to the composting cycle, human waste produces a modest level of toxicity. The solution to this is, again, allowing natural processes to work for you. Humans posess the necessary bacteria to digest food. It is how we break it down into components that the rest of the body can consume and work with the byproduct being methane gas. Putting the waste into a sealed container and applying heat speeds this process along, creating a supply of methane gas to run heaters and cooking appliances. Funny how much use there is in waste.

Every drop of water that enters the body will eventually leave. The body never retains more water than it needs. In a closed-system environment, the water that leaves the body stays within the system. Water, from showers, sinks, etc. can be run through the Airwell solar distillation setup. A storage tank holds more than enough water to keep irrigation, and other processes of life going in constant flow. Eventually, every drop of water in the system is passed through the Airwell  solar distiller. The Airwell removes all impurities from the water. This includes sediment, bacteria, minerals, ... virtually anything that isn't pure water is left behind.

FREEDOM FROM THE "GRIDS"

How about that heating and electric bill? There's a way to unplug using some down home modern technology. Closed system housing is about working smarter, not harder.

We are blessed with two major power sources that are around us all the time: the sun and the wind. There are many ways to tap into those sources without a major investment. A solar steam generator is inexpensive and reliable. For those days when there's no sun, a small windmill is also installed as a backup.
